The Yorkshire Terrier (or known as a YORKIE) is a breed of small dog in the
terrier category.  The long- haired terrier is known for its playful demeanor and
distinctive blue and gold coat.  Yorkies can be very small usually weighing not
more than 7 pounds.  Yorkies are a breed with no undercoat, which means they
do not shed as much as their short haired friends.  Rather, their hair is like
human hair in that it grows continuously and falls out rarely (only when brushed
or broken).  Additionally, since Yorkies carry less dander on their coat, they
generally do not have the unpleasant  "wet dog" odor when wet, and they may
not affect as many people who suffer from dog-related allergies.
Individual dogs will differ, but they are generally intelligent, independent and
courageous.  Yorkies are quick to determine where they fit in a family.  Yorkies
typically get along well with other dogs and love to play together with them.  As
a breed they are generally quiet, choosing only to bark at real or perceived
dangers to their family.  They make well rounded family pets.  They learn to
recognize numerous words and can be taught to fetch toys by their names.
A Maltese does not shed and is covered with long, silky, white fur.  The Maltese
breed of today is descended from dogs long associated with the island of Malta.
Characteristics include slightly rounded skulls, with one-finger-wide dome and a
black nose.  The body is compact with the length equaling the height.  Adult
Maltese range from roughly 3 to 7 pounds.
For all their diminutive size, Maltese seem to be without fear.  In fact, Maltese
seem indifferent to creatures and objects larger than themselves, which make
them very easy to socialize with other dogs, and even cats.  They love time with
owners, because they are bred to be companion dogs and thrive on love and
attention.  They are very lively and playful, and even as they age, their energy
level and playful demeanor remain.  Maltese are very good with children and
infants.  Maltese do not require much physical exercise, although they should
be walked daily to reduce problem behavior.
Maltese have no undercoat, and have little to no shedding if cared for properly.
Like their relatives Poodles and Bichon Frise', they are considered to be largely
hypoallergenic and many people who are allergic to dogs may not be allergic to
the Maltese.  Daily cleaning prevents the risk of tear-staining.
The SHIH TZU is a dog breed that originated in China.  The Shih Tzu is reported
to be the smallest and oldest of the Tibetan holy dogs.  The Shih Tzu is
characterized by its long, flowing double coat; sturdy build; intelligence; and
friendly, energetic, lively attitude.  In breeding all coat colors are allowed.  The
ideal Shih Tzu height at 9 to 10 inches and solid, compact body is standard.  This
breed has some to no shedding.
The life span of a Shih Tzu is 13-15 years although some variation from this
range is possible.  A Shih Tzu has two coats of fur, with the bottom coat
shedding into the top coat rather than off the dog entirely; as a result, this breed
sheds very little in the conventional sense.  With regular brushing and bathing,
shedding can be reduced to almost nothing.  As they shed so lightly, Shih Tzus
are considered to be one of the breeds more suitable for people with allergies.
The Pomeranian (often known as a Pom) is a breed of dog of the Spitz type, named
for the Pomerania region in Central Europe and classed as a toy dog because of
their small size.  The breed standard calls for a cobby, balanced dog: no longer
than it is tall.  The ears are small and set high.  Its tail is characteristic of the breed
and should be turned over the back and carried flat.  Beneath the Pomeranian's
fur is a small but muscular dog, similar in appearance to a Chihuahua.  The average
Pom is 3 to 7 pounds.
The Pom has two coats, an undercoat and a top coat; the first is thick, soft, and
fluffy; the latter is long, straight and coarse.  The undercoat is shed once a year by
males, and by females when they are in season, after delivering a litter, and during
times of stress.  All coat colors, patterns and variations thereof are acceptable.
Poms often live 12-19 years.  Some very healthy Poms have been known to live 20
years.
Pomeranians are typically very friendly, playful and active.  They are very
intelligent as toy breeds go and easily housebroken and trained.  Pomeranians
socialize well with other dogs and animals.  Pomeranians are extroverted and have
a lot to say.  They are extremely loyal and will sit or lay content at an owner's feet
and normally prefer not to be overhandled.  Overall, the dogs make great loving
companions.
